Virginia Social Indicator Dashboard
Behavioral Health Wellness: Virginia Prevention Works!
Community Snapshot

What is this dashboard?

The Virginia Social Indicator Dashboard is a compilation of behavioral health data from agencies and organizations across the state. The goal of the dashboard is to centralize key indicators of behavioral health and wellness to use as a resource for needs assessment, epidemiological monitoring and planning.

Using This Dashboard and its Features

At the top of the page, there are options to view Data by Data Source. Clicking on the link will show you available data under each. Data sources have multiple indicators within a specific content area (for example, criminal justice). Most data tabs include a map as well as charts and graphs to demonstrate trends.
Hovering over a locality or region on the map, or over a data point on a graph will highlight exact data values and present them to you. Additionally, by selecting a locality or region on the map, graphics will compare your selection to the state.
Don't want to see everything? Use filters to select data from certain years or to change the map type (Locality, CSB, or Region). Please note that additional filters are available and vary by tab.
At the top of each tab, you will see icons that will allow you to download the data in Excel or export the tab as a PDF. You can use these files to further explore the data or share information with others.

Data Considerations

Regional Considerations

  • Data was available for different geographic and demographic groups across data sources. Whenever possible, the most granular level of data is provided.
  • In some cases the most granular level of data available may be at a regional level that differs from DBHDS regional designations. If community level data was available, localities have been aggregated to the Community Service Board level and DBHDS Regional level. For more information on DBHDS Regions, click here.
  • The independent city of Bedford, Virginia was changed to town status and was added to Bedford County effective July 1, 2013. For consistency on this dashboard, Bedford City and Bedford county data were combined across data collection years for all data sources.

Data Presented

  • Data suppression criteria followed the criteria provided by the data source. Suppression criteria may vary across data sources and is used to maintain confidentiality.
  • Many data tabs include the option to view data as a count or as a rate. Count data is useful in looking at the total quantity of an event but may be influenced by the size of the underlying population. A rate means that the data was standardized to a common denominator and can be compared across geographic or demographic groups.
  • Data points with low percentages (e.g., below 0.5%) may not appear in the demographic bar charts. Download the excel export file to obtain the exact values.
